In , he lost his fellowship and returned to Leipzig. In , he became the first American to earn a German PhD in experimental psychology with Wilhelm Wundt , who is often credited with establishing the new science. He thus abandoned these procedures to emphasize the behavior of his subjects—a term he apparently introduced in reports on psychological experiments—and set a precedent that many later psychologists followed.
