In until Tan was tasked to teach law and also became the head of the police examination syndicate to carry law exams for the promotion of officers. Apart from teaching law he conducts classes for officers to enhance their knowledge in their law examinations. He also teaches law to trainee Inspectors in enhancing their knowledge in investigation and prosecution skills.

In held the post as the Head CID of Legal Prosecution were he supervise all investigation papers and give advice on law and prosecution. Part the job was to recommend for amendments of law and procedure so as to be relevant with the court directions and judges rule. Whilst working as the Deputy Director of CID he has conducted many operations against car thefts and lorry hijacking resulting in a number of arrest and prosecutions and recovery of stolen goods.

He also formalise crime prevention plans to curb lorry hijacking and work closely with factory owners. In he was posted as the Chief Police Officer of Johore where he introduce community oriented. As Johore is wellknown for organised crime activities such gambling, prostitution and loan shark he was hard on the kingpins and a number of them were arrested and charged some sent for detention under the preventive law.

He was also hard on his officers and implemented a high integrity plan for his officers by working closely with the Anti Corruption Agency. As such organised crime was reduced during his term as CPO of Johore.
